LORREN LOWREY
LORREN LOWREY
Ritual (2018)
In this body of work, titled Ritual, ceramic artist Lorren Lowrey was particularly interested in fusing art history motifs, animal subject matter, and religious symbolism into a loosely suggestive narrative. Sculpted in porcelain, these anthropomorphic arrangements carefully balance on the edge of macabre, while dancing between the lines of beautiful and uncomfortable. Much of Lorren's influence is from 17th century Dutch still life paintings, specifically momento mori paintings, that contain warnings through the depiction of mundane objects. In these sculptures, she deliberately partners common objects with strange animal compositions, arranged in surreal ways, to create an obscure narrative imbued with tension and wonder.
